January 26, 2008 - The first view of Killimanjaro

After a great rest, I looked stepped out of the lodge to check out the view, since it was dark when we arrived. How exciting to see the peak of Kilimanjaro! Of course, there were many clouds - you can hardly see it just under the palm tree in the foreground.

After a briefing, where we meet our team (Simba) and guides, we travel to Ndarakwia camp. The camp is a "permanent camp", with comfortable “permanent tents”, hot showers – via a bucket water heated over a fire, and great food.

That afternoon, we took a walking safari – time to get loosened up and enjoy some scenery and wildlife!

In the evening, we were served a nice dinner, and then enjoyed a very nice surprise. The camp staff marched into the dining tent singing the "Jambo Bwana" song - a very upbeat, happy song. They marched around a bit, then set two birthday cakes down in front of JT & I. My birthday was the day before we left the US, and JT's was the day we plan to leave Tanzania. The folks at Thompson Safari's must have communicated to the local staff that we had birthdays and Tanzanian's will take any excuse for a party!
